“Why do two colors, put one next to the other, sing? Can one really explain this? no. Just as one can never learn how to paint.”
The Dot Series is about color and meditation. Colorful abstract brushstrokes are the subject of this artwork series. The painting process for this series is a form of meditation.
Each Dot Series panel is a different experiment in color combinations. The colors range wildly between paintings in this series. Many of the Dot Series paintings are multicolored combining bright, bold colors and softer neutrals.
Some paintings have a similar range of color, like the purple-dominant artwork shown above. Other Dot Series paintings use a large variety and spectrum of color like the piece shown below.
The paintings in this series take many months, sometimes years to complete. The process is extremely slow because with each artwork I carefully layer thin acrylic paint brushstrokes and glazes on board panels.
One small brushstroke can change the look of an entire painting. In session after session I add glazes and colors until the combination moves and sings.
I call this painting series my "art therapy" because the careful, deliberate painting process forces me to slow down, focus, and consider each mark made. I find the relaxed painting pace puts me in a meditative and calm state, even while the colors used are bright, lively and exciting.
Painting the Dot Series is a way for me to actively meditate and focus. Each one is a surprise to paint and complete. I never know how they'll turn out and keep adding layers and layers until they seem to be complete.
Like the Picasso quote above, working on this Dot Series is a reminder that I'm constantly learning and still figuring out how to paint. Creating this painting series is a way to keep inspired and excited about color combinations and playful experiments. While the process attempts at control, the resulting brushstrokes are messy and imperfect.
These art pieces start in the small range from small 4” x 4” gessobords up to medium clay boards and large 3’ x 3’ wood panels.
The multicolor painting shown above is Dot Series 15, Size: 5 x 5 x 1 inches, Acrylic on Cradled Wood Painting. The purple-dominant paint show above is a medium size artwork titled Dot S Medium Purple and Blue 1 and measuring 20" x 16". The painting shown below is my largest Dot Series work to date. It's titled Dot S Large Purple and Blue 1 and measures 3 by 3 feet.
These three cradled wood panel paintings could be hung differently onto a wall. There's no need to frame it.
The bright colors and playful brushstrokes make Dot Series paintings perfect for kids' bedrooms and playrooms. The colors in this artwork are fun, happy and lively and are perfect wall art for cool modern family homes.
To date, I've painted over 30 individual paintings in the Dot Series. At least 8 more are in process in my studio. These artworks are in various stages of completion and should be done soon.
