5 Art Postcard Entries in Different Media

Artists were allowed to submit unlimited entries so over the course of a few days I made the 5 postcards shown here. I submitted 3 mixed media postcards, along with one painting and one dot drawing. Each artwork measures s 5" x 7" on paper. (This was the required sized for the art competition.) My kids also made their own postcards for the Youth Category!

Abstract, Colorful Painting and Drawing Postcards

The first image shown above is a Dot Series painting in Neon. I've been creating this colorful painting series for a few years. You can read more about the process and inspiration for this artwork in the Blog Post Dot Series Paintings: Color & Meditation.

The abstract drawing postcard shown below was made using color pencil crayons. It was inspired by my Dot Series paintings. I often create colorful pencil drawings like this one when drawing and doing art projects with my children. The pencil marks have the look of brushstrokes, similar to my layered abstract paintings. Blues, pinks, purples and greens make this abstract drawing look like an abstracted landscape.

Italy Collages Using My Original Photographs

Three of my entries to the Snail Mail Postcard Contest are collages using a mixture of paint, drawing materials and my original photographs. All the photographs used in these collage postcards were taken during two hot summers in Italy. You can read more about why I love Italy and find it so inspiring in these two Blog Posts:

Repurposing Failed Artwork into Mixed Media Collages

By request of a wonderful art collector (who's bought three of my Limited Edition Italy Art Prints in the last year for her home), I've been trying to make note cards and personal stationary using my Italy photos. The process has involved editing and testing my Italy photographs on different papers, glosses and with different prints.Once I get the cards right I will offer them for sale in my new online Art Shop.

In the meantime, I'm using the failed test prints in these new Italy mixed media collages. It's been really interesting and fun to mix up my photography with paint and markers. The result is abstract, colorful artwork like the postcards shown here. These three Italy artworks were made in the middle of a very cold, snowy Toronto winter when I was dreaming of summertime in Italy. I started the three Italy postcards on a snowy Toronto Sunday while drinking Italian wine and eating delicious cheese and prosciutto.
