Green Purple Abstract Flowers, 2019, 18” x 18” (45.72 cm x 45.72 cm), Acrylic on Canvas Painting by artist Rachael Grad. Painted in the cold Toronto spring when I was dreaming of colorful flowers and warmer weather. The bright, vivid colors in this original abstract flower painting include purple, green, yellow, pink, white and multicolors.

The weather in Toronto was still freezing and feeling like winter so I painted multicolor flowers and grass in bright, bold colors. Keep reading to learn more about the inspiration and painting process for Green Purple Abstract Flowers.

Inspiration for Green Purple Abstract Flowers Painting

The Abstract Flower Painting Series started on the first day of Spring, March 20, 2019. In Toronto that day it was still freezing cold but the sun was shining, and the ice and snow was melting. When I looked outside my studio window, I could feel the start of spring.

I started painting imagined flowers and grasses of what I hoped would soon appear in Toronto. These paintings are very colorful and lively with lots of movement.

This artwork is currently on view in Markham, Ontario at the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites Conference Centre. To purchase it, please contact me.

Painting Process for Abstract Flowers

To start an abstract flower painting, I draw a compositional sketch with a thin layer of paint. I carefully choose my color combinations. Then I apply washes, brushstrokes and palette knife marks of colorful paint.

I experiment with different paint applications across the canvas or panel. Each artwork has many layers and lots of texture built up over multiple painting sessions.

Each abstract flower paintings is the accumulation of many layers of paint over lots of painting sessions. Over time as I apply paint, the artwork becomes more abstracted and colorful.

Why I Paint With Acrylic for Abstract Flower Paintings

Acrylic paint works well for layering abstract flowers and grasses. The quick drying acrylic paint allows me to create colorful layers with depth. I can achieve this effect more quickly with acrylic paint than with oil paint.
